The Witch Files

It’s like The Craft, Blair Witch Project, and Degrassi all rolled into one!

A group of young women come together to form a powerful coven. They soon discover they have the ability to grant their every wish, but there’s danger in channeling forces beyond their control.

Although the found footage aesthetic The Witch Files uses is totally unnecessary, the film actually tells an engrossing story with fun characters. Many might not find it as iconic as The Craft, but there’s some major things that makes it so it works.

It’s hard out here on these mystical streets – especially Carnival Row.

A human detective and a fairy rekindle a dangerous affair in a Victorian fantasy world, while a string of murders collapses the city’s uneasy peace.

Carnival Row is a dark fantasy with an interesting premise, but suffers from uneven pacing and scattered plot focus. Also, it tries way too hard with the sex scenes to remind us it is an “adult” fantasy show.

Can you enjoy a prequel if you know that many of the characters may not have a happy ending?

Netflix’s The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance takes up that challenge.

A prequel to Jim Henson’s The Dark Crystal of 1982, the new series takes place on the planet Thra. Three Gelflings- Rian, Deet, Brea- inspire a rebellion against the Skeksis when they discover a horrifying secret behind their power that threatens all of Thra.

The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance is an epic DARK fantasy with great world building and beautiful storytelling. The centering of masterful puppetry puts to shame many of the recent fantasy films that rely too heavily on soulless CGI.

Also, if you miss Game of Thrones, you’ll love this series. Don’t let the puppetry deter you.
